Kelley and I are fortunate to share the same love for creativity and design. We enjoy going to markets or Craft Fairs together and we often discussed setting up our own craft business so we could share our passion with others. In recent years we began experimenting with different materials and travelled to a variety of courses both here and in the U.K to help enhance our skills. During 2020 we started making some pieces for friends and family as gifts and have since decided to start TerKel Design.
We believe creativity inspires collective thinking and we want to work with our customers creativity to bring their ideas to a reality.
We do not envisage having large quantities of stock products, instead we hope our creations will inspire our customers to get involved in the design stage and together we can create a unique piece tailored to suit their ideas.
"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes.
Art is knowing which ones to keep."
- Scott Adams (cartoonist)
“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” – Albert Einstein
My interest in design began at a very young age. My parents always supported my creative side and in school I was lucky to have had a teacher whose passion for the skill inspired me to make a career from it. When I left school, I started my apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery with a local joinery. During my time in the joinery I worked my way up from an apprentice to becoming a fully qualified carpenter working on a number of important large-scale projects. I also worked with customers to help guide them through the initial stages of design and problem solving to make their ideas a reality. As my career progressed, I found great satisfaction in sharing my knowledge with other apprentices or summer staff, to help them progress and develop their own skills. It was this process of sharing my knowledge to help others that has guided me to where I am today.
In 2012, I returned to college to become a woodwork teacher and I hope that in my current career as a teacher I can enable students to believe in themselves and to reach their full potential. I believe creativity is so important and it is a skill that is so often over looked in todays society where simply fitting in and following trends has become so normal. People are often too focused on results or other people that they are afraid to make mistakes. However, it is only by taking risks and trying something new that you really get to see your full potential.
TerKel Design wants to give you the opportunity to share your creative ideas and together we hope to bring your creativity to life with one of our custom pieces.
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." - Benjamin Franklin
Design and creativity has always been in my family, my grandfather, my father and my uncle are carpenters. As a child it used to fascinate me how they could transform anything into beautiful joinery. My father used to always involve me and encourage me when I was helping him. As I got older and progressed through school maths, art and woodwork became my favourite subjects. My cousin and I would relax after school by spending hours drawing and colouring in the evenings. When I finished school I went on to study hairdressing and I completed a part time Diploma in Interior Design. I loved them both, they enabled me to portray my creative side in completely different ways. However as time went on I began searching for a new challenge.
In August 2016 I started a new career and I have enjoyed every opportunity I have received since starting with them. In 2018, I was awarded an NUIG Scholarship for a Diploma in Operations Engineering which I have completed and I am currently half way through a second NUIG Scholarship, a B.SC. in Science and Technology. Pursuing this new career has been fantastic for me it has challenged me in numerous ways. It has rekindled my love for maths and problem solving and in 2020 I received a recognition award for a research project I completed.
The skills I have gained in my careers so far have given me the confidence to establish TerKel Design and start sharing my passions for creativity, problem solving, design and art with others.
