Kelley and I are fortunate to share the same love for creativity and design. We enjoy going to markets or Craft Fairs together and we often discussed setting up our own craft business so we could share our passion with others. In recent years we began experimenting with different materials and travelled to a variety of courses both here and in the U.K to help enhance our skills. During 2020 we started making some pieces for friends and family as gifts and have since decided to start TerKel Design.
We believe creativity inspires collective thinking and we want to work with our customers creativity to bring their ideas to a reality.
We do not envisage having large quantities of stock products, instead we hope our creations will inspire our customers to get involved in the design stage and together we can create a unique piece tailored to suit their ideas.
"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes.
Art is knowing which ones to keep."
- Scott Adams (cartoonist)
"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." – Albert Einstein
My fascination with design sparked early in my life, nurtured by the unwavering support of my parents. During my school years, I was fortunate to encounter a teacher whose knowledge and passion for the craft ignited my ambition to pursue it professionally. Upon leaving school, I began my journey in a local joinery as an apprentice Carpenter and Joiner. Over time, I progressed from apprentice to fully qualified, gaining valuable experience working on significant large-scale projects both in the workshop and on-site. I collaborated closely with clients, helping to translate their initial design ideas into tangible realities.
As my career evolved, I found profound fulfillment in sharing my knowledge with other apprentices and summer staff, aiding in their progress and skill development. This process of knowledge sharing has been instrumental in shaping my journey to where I am today.
In 2012, driven by a thirst for further learning, I returned to college, and in 2016, I proudly graduated with a B.Sc. in Design and Technology Education. In my current role as a teacher, I aspire to empower students to believe in themselves and reach their full potential. I believe that creativity is often overlooked in today's society, where conformity and trend-following are the norm. People are too often focused on results or the opinions of others, fearing mistakes. However, it is through taking risks and trying new things that one truly discovers their capabilities.
At TerKel Design, we aim to cultivate an environment where creative ideas can thrive. Together, let's embark on a journey to bring your imaginative visions to life through our bespoke creations.
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." - Benjamin Franklin
Design and creativity have always been ingrained in my family's heritage; my grandfather, father, and uncle all share a passion for carpentry. Witnessing their ability to transform raw materials into exquisite joinery fascinated me from a young age. My father nurtured this fascination by involving me in his projects, igniting my interest early on. As I progressed through school, maths, art, and woodwork emerged as my favourite subjects. After school, my cousin and I would spend hours immersed in drawing and colouring, further nurturing my creative spirit.
After completing secondary school, I explored different paths, studying hairdressing and pursuing a part-time diploma in Interior Design. While they both allowed me to express my creativity in unique ways, I found myself craving for new challenges.
In August 2016, I embarked on a fresh career journey, embracing every opportunity that came my way. This led me to pursue two NUIG Scholarships, earning a Diploma in Operations Engineering in 2020 and a B.Sc. in Science and Technology in 2022 and in 2024 I hope to graduate with a Masters in Applied Sciences and Enterprise Systems. This career transition has been transformative, reigniting my passion for maths and problem-solving, culminating in a recognition award for a research project in 2020.
With this wealth of knowledge, experience and newfound confidence we established TerKel Design as a platform to share our passions for creativity, problem solving, design and art with others.
